Birth of the N Series

In the late 1970s, optical design of EL Nikkor lenses was modified and a gradual shift to the "N" series, the exteriors of which were changed to take darkroom operation into consideration, was began. In 1979, the EL Nikkor 50mm F2.8 was reborn as the EL Nikkor 50mm F2.8N with even better optical performance.

The lens cap just sits on top of the lens. Early caps did not have the Nikon logo. Later caps have the Nikon logo on them. There are two types of sponge cushions: round and square.

For many photographers, I think the first photo enlargement lens they bought was a 50mm lens. The EL Nikkor 50mm F2.8N lens was good for them and reasonably priced. Please see the price at the time of 1984.

Ikuo Mori

The EL Nikkor 50mm F2.8N lens was designed by Mr. Ikuo Mori, an engineer of Nippon Kogaku. Mori-san is famous as a designer of NIKKOR 13mm F5.6 lens.
Mori-san designed the EL Nikkor 50mm F2.8N lens by improving the EL Nikkor 50mm F2.8 lens designed by Mr. Zenji Wakimoto.
